PARKS AND RECREATION

The Recreation Department is responsible for running youth programs, such as arts and crafts, swimming lessons, concerts and fireworks at Masone Beach during the summer months. A detailed summer program is mailed to all residents every June and will be posted on the website when available.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT

The Building Department is responsible for issuing permits for residential and commercial construction, rental dwelling permits, tree planting permits, certificates of occupancy and completion, public assembly and signage permits, plumbing permits, electrician licenses, plumber's licenses and landscaping licenses. The department investigates complaints of violation of the Village and State Codes and assures that all proposed construction work complies with the safety requirements of said codes.

If you are planning any home improvements for your home, installing a fence, deck, pool or any alterations, please contact the Building Department first to obtain the proper information of the ordinances governing these projects.

Work that requires a permit:
· All alterations and new construction
· Demolition of part or all of a structure
· Demolition of a garage
· Expanding living space
· Above or in ground pools/hot tubs
· Signs
· Storage Sheds
· Changing the use of a dwelling or business
· Putting in a new boiler or hot water heater
· Plumbing fixtures

If your work is not listed above, please give us a call to verify the need of a permit.

NOTE: All Electrical and Plumbing work MUST be done by a VILLAGE LICENSED PLUMBER or ELECTRICIAN.

As an important reminder, all property owners or occupants are required to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks at their home or business. Sidewalks must be kept safe and passable. All business owners are asked to make sure sidewalks and surrounding areas are well maintained and free of debris to minimize injuries to pedestrians on the sidewalks.

Building permit review and inspections are done by our Chief Building Inspector every Saturday throughout the year. Inspections are by appointment only and can be made by contacting the Village Office at 516-431-0600 M-F 9-4:30p.m.

PUBLIC WORKS

The Department of Public Works is under the supervision of the Commissioner of Public Works and Trustee Joseph Annarella. The Public Works Department is located at 580 Long Beach Road.

SANITATION

COLLECTION POLICY

All garbage must be placed in garbage cans with secure tops. No plastic bags.
All garbage cans must be removed from the curb promptly.
No propane tanks, compressed gas or furnaces.
Contractors are responsible for removal of all construction debris.
If homeowners are doing extensive construction, they must get a dumpster.
Dumpsters parked on village streets must have reflectors and be removed promptly.
Refrigerators and freezers must have their doors removed.
Paint cans, varnish, paint removers, chemicals MUST be taken to Public Works Garage.
Carpets and rugs must be rolled and tied in small bundles.
Village employees are not permitted on private property.
Bulk garbage MUST NOT be put out before 7 P.M.

YARD WASTE

Limbs must be four (4) feet in length and tied into manageable bundles.
Grass cutting and leaves must be bagged.

RECYCLING

Cans, glass and plastic should be placed in recycling bins.
Newspapers should be tied and placed alongside bins.
Bins can be picked-up at the Department of Public Works.

SNOW REMOVAL

Snow must be removed from sidewalks within twelve (12) hour of snowfall.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Garbage is collected three (3) times a week in both Districts.
District 1. Monday, Wednesday (includes recycling) and Friday (includes bulk)
District 2. Tuesday, Thursday (includes recycling) and Friday (includes bulk)

Garbage is collected the day after a holiday. Garbage will be collected on the Thursday before a holiday when the holiday occurs on a Friday. If Public Works is closed on the day of your scheduled RECYCLING, it will be picked up the week after.

The Village provides all its residents yearly calendars that include all the above garbage collection information. This information is also included in our online-calendar.

The Public Works Departments also provides the following services:

Repairing street lights (Residents must call Village Office when needed with location of light).
Repairing of parking meters once they are reported.
Repairing and maintaining the streets and parking lots which includes sweeping and line striping, and in winter, sanding and plowing.
Fleet and Building Maintenance.
Maintenance of Island Park Beach and Park.

VILLAGE ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS

The Zoning Board reviews applications that propose to use property in a manner that is not consistent with Village codes. After a building permit application is denied you have the option to apply to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a variance. Each case must go through an application process and special hearing to determine whether a variance will be granted.
